SVTU’s Arden Local meets on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month at Faith Legacy Church (3532 Whitney Ave, Sacramento CA 95821). Find us in the Fellowship Hall from 6:30-8:30pm, eating slices of Jojo’s Halal Pizza while we problem-solve our housing struggles together.
Since we began building community with our neighbors in Arden in early 2024, we’ve seen landlords taking advantage of tenants by issuing junk fees, intimidating immigrants and non-English speakers, and letting places fall into disrepair. These abusive landlords often hide behind shell companies, online billing platforms, and unresponsive property managers to do their dirty work.

SVTU members get the word out about the local and the power of collective tenant action by knocking doors at over 30 apartment buildings so far. With the local, tenants have been able to stand up to landlord abuse, overcome housing challenges, share knowledge, learn together, and find solidarity with others in moments of extreme difficulty, often across differences in culture and language. SVTU has supported the creation of three Arden tenants associations: the Palms Apartments Tenants Association, the Amber Grove Tenants Association, and the Tortona Tenants Association.
Palms tenants conducted a successful year-long rent strike and won significant settlements with their landlord after a fire at their residence, and the Tortona Tenants Association remains in struggle against bogus fees, unfair rents, negligent maintenance, and intimidation. If you rent in Arden, you and your neighbors could form SVTU’s next tenants association!
Tenants come together at general member meetings, local chapter meetings, and tenant association meetings around Sacramento——in Arden-Arcade, Del Paso Heights, and South Sacramento——where volunteers host a space to gather with neighbors, share experiences, challenges, and resources, and work together to solve problems. SVTU volunteers offer advice and follow-up support for tenants in crisis and for tenants interested in building power where they live through collective action and tenant associations. SVTU volunteers are committed to organizing tenants to build power against landlords and the predatory systems they control.
SVTU is a union run by and for our members. Our locals and tenant associations are run by and for their members. We fight for tenants, not for housing. We build tenant power through collective action. We practice and build solidarityーnot charityーacross buildings, neighborhoods, borders, and language barriers. We advocate a strategy of class struggle: Those who exploit us through the “housing market”ーlandlords, developers, and lendersーand those who manage itーpolice, lawyers, and politiciansーare highly organized, and so they must be met with an organized, militant tenant movement.
There is no tenant power without collective action. SVTU volunteers support and train tenants to confront our abusive landlords and property managers by gathering with our neighbors, identifying common concerns, making collective demands, and uniting around common strategies and tactics to carry out together as a group, including: forming tenant associations; sending petitions to landlords; launching code enforcement campaigns; running door knocking and letter writing campaigns; conducting landlord research; submitting civic and legal complaints; holding public protests; hosting press conferences; and conducting rent strikes.
