About SVTU
Sacramento Valley Tenants Union is building tenant power in the Sacramento region. We’ve faced the rampant abuse of tenants by unscrupulous and negligent landlords, and we’re banding together as tenants across the region to fight the injustice!
SVTU organizes local chapters and tenants associations to build collective tenant power at the level of the building and the neighborhood.
Just as workers can unite as a union to fight for better conditions where we work, tenants can join together to fight for better conditions where we live. It’s happening right now all over Sacramento!

We are a volunteer group of tenants supporting other tenants. Nobody gets paid and all union work is done through solidarity labor, all costs covered through member dues. This union is a labor of love.
SVTU is committed to autonomy: this isn’t a non-profit and doesn’t receive grants from the government. This isn’t an electoral organization: we don’t endorse politicians or support legislation.

The union strives for language justice: everyone deserves to speak and be understood in the language in which they are most comfortable. We consider this essential to build a powerful, lasting union. We produce materials in multiple languages and we have interpretation kits to interpret at meetings whenever we have volunteer interpreters available.
SVTU is a member of the Autonomous Tenants Union Network (ATUN-RSIA), and SVTU members affirm the ATUN Points of Unity.

The best way to get help with a housing issue and get involved in organizing with the union is to attend neighborhood local meetings near you. Meetings are open to all tenants, so if we donβt have a local in your neighborhood yet, feel free to stop by any of the meetings. See the calendar for upcoming meeting dates.

Tenants Associations
If you rent in an apartment building, forming a tenants association (TA) is the most powerful means of protecting yourself from abuse and building tenant power to win demands from your landlord.
SVTU volunteer organizers can help you launch your tenant association and build support. Resources are available to download which can also help guide you through the process.
